Anime 101: Kaguya-sama: Love is War

Kaguya-sama: Love is War is a romantic comedy that first aired in 2019. The most recent season, season three, aired between April 9 and June 25, 2022. The anime is based off the manga, which had over 15 million copies in circulation as of April 2021. In the show, two classmates find themselves in a stagnant rivalry as neither wants to reveal their love for the other. The hilarity continues as each of them attempts to trick the other into confessing first.

Synopsis

Miyuki Shirogane is the president of the student council and he is head over heels in love with fellow student council member, Kaguya Shinomiya. In turn, Kaguya is equally in love with Shirogane. Although this could have been a happily-ever-after moment right from the beginning, they are each too prideful to show weakness. Weaknesses include confessing to crushes.

Additionally, Shirogane and Kaguya both know they are in love with each other. Thus, they spend their days strategizing traps to trick their opponent into confessing. As a result, the two main characters have found themselves in a war-like situation, while the other members of the student council are completely unaware of the battlefield surrounding them.

In fact, the other members of the student council must fight their own battles. Chika Fujiwara frequently finds herself battling Shirogane’s terrible athletic ability as his personal trainer. Likewise, Yu Ishigami is constantly battling Kaguya’s wrath. He has a tendency to say the wrong things at the wrong times. Through all of these comedic hardships, the narrator is the icing on top. He is a character of his own and adds commentary to the showdown as if it’s a sporting event.

Kaguya-sama: Love is War is a fantastic anime for people who enjoy slice-of-life shows. Furthermore, this is a great introduction to romance anime for viewers that are hesitant to pick up the genre. Also, the humor lightens the mood as the show starts, but doesn’t prevent the series from having lovely serious moments in later seasons.
