Black Clover is an action-packed anime that began airing in 2017. The story is based on the manga which was first published in Shonen Jump in 2015. This anime has so many fun characters and excellent comedic timing, but the best part is that it tells the story of an underdog combatting both his own weaknesses and an unjust society.
Synopsis
In the anime, Black Clover, two boys are raised as brothers at the orphanage church in their small town. Despite, arriving at the orphanage at the same time and being the same age, the boys are nothing alike. Asta is loud and rambunctious with infinite energy. Yuno is reserved and analytical. The only thing they have in common is that they both desperately wish to become the Wizard King, the Magical Emperor that leads the Magic Knight armies.
Most everyone in Black Clover is born with a certain amount of magical ability. Noble families are born with strong magic, while rural farmers are born with weak magic. At the age of 15, each person is invited to participate in a Grimoire Acceptance Ceremony. A grimoire is a book that enhances magical abilities and records spells.
When Yuno and Asta arrive at the ceremony, each boy experiences an unexpected and remarkable outcome. The grimoire assigned to Yuno by fate is a four-leaf clover grimoire. Average grimoires consist of three leaves, but four-leaf clover grimoires hold extremely good luck and are given to wizards with powerful magical inclinations. Asta, however, was born with absolutely no magical capabilities. In fact, he doesn’t receive a grimoire at all.
After the ceremony, soft-spoken Yuno is cornered by bullies who want to steal his fancy grimoire and sell it. Asta immediately jumps in to help. Although Asta fears nothing, he can’t help that he is weak against magic users. Just when Asta is about to give up, Yuno recognizes the completely powerless Asta as his rival, which reignites Asta’s spirit. In this moment, a grimoire appears for Asta at last, but this one has five clovers and comes with a giant sword.
In the adopted brothers rivalry to become the next Wizard King, they must face countless challenges including joining a Magic Knight Squad, making friends, learning spells, saving all of humanity from hoards of resurrected elves, and going on trial for treason. Okay, you can ignore those last two… for now.
Black Clover uses complex world building and has an engaging storyline. The eccentric characters are charming and the opening songs are all exceptional. Additionally, the main character’s tenacity is contagious. This show will inspire viewers of any age to never give up. The series will welcome a brand new movie this year in 2023.

Cosplay Options
If you’re interested in cosplaying from Black Clover, there is a large cast of characters, so there are plenty of options to choose from! They also wear Magic Knight capes to signify which squad they belong to, so it’s easy to cosplay multiple characters with one cape.
Asta – Asta is wildly energetic and ambitious. He has gray hair and and a black headband. He wears blue pants, a white shirt, and a blue jacket. He also wears a Black Bulls cape.
Noelle Silva – Noelle is of royal blood, but scorned by her family. She has silver hair tied into pigtails. She also wears a white and purple outfit with a Black Bulls cape.
Yuno – Yuno is emotionally cold and incredibly powerful. He has black hair and a Golden Dawn cape. He also wears purple pants, a navy blue shirt, and brown boots.
Secre – Secre is a passive witness and a loyal servant. She has short black hair with two horns on her head. Additionally, she wears a short black dress.

You’ll have the chance to meet Dallas Reid and Jill Harris of Black Clover at Anime St. Pete in St. Petersburg, Florida September 17-18.
